Gibson will serve another term if asked again

PHILIPSBURG - If asked again Richard Gibson, without thinking twice, would say yes to becoming minister for another period. “But right now there is nothing on the table,” he said.

Gibson provided clarity about his position during an interview on radio station PJD2 yesterday. He said the satisfaction one had from being a civil servant was much greater than pursuing the mighty dollar, so great that although being a minister meant having less time for his business and family, still he would do it again.

There is a lot of speculation about who is going to be the next minister of constitutional affairs, assuming that the portfolio will go again to St. Maarten. Gibson said though that it was unfair to put pressure on any person or party that was going to be part of the next government to continue with the same minister and same portfolio as before. “People should be free to consider what’s in the best interest of the country.”

Those interests should be the element on which that decision is based. It is not a certainty that the portfolio of constitutional and internal affairs will go back to the Windward Islands automatically, he said.

National Alliance party leader William Marlin refused to comment yesterday about the importance of the portfolio of constitutional affairs for his party during the upcoming talks with formateur Pedro Atacho. “We do not negotiate through the media. I know what reporters want. Then they will print that Marlin said this or that.”

In the meantime a lot of rumours are going around as to who the next minister of constitutional affairs will be. The names Roland Duncan, Ralph Richardson and Dennis Richardson have been circulating. None of them was available for comment yesterday
