Med School breaks ground for Saba’s largest building

SABA - Government officials and faculty from Saba University School of Medicine (SUSOM) gathered Tuesday morning for the official ground breaking for the third building of the University campus.

Associate Dean Vincent Knight opened the ceremony and welcomed the group seated under an awning near the new site, which is to the back of the present classroom building. The new building will house four classrooms, offices, and administrative space. At 30,000 square feet, it will be the largest university building, and thus the largest building on Saba.

Knight emphasised the importance of tertiary education, which he said has sound value for the island. He pointed out that it should also have value for local youth since it provides a model that education is the key to a valued profession.

Lt. Governor Antoine Solagnier congratulated the people of Saba for providing an environment that encouraged the University to continue its investment in infrastructure. He said that the expansions provided an opportunity for more jobs, housing, and business opportunities.

Commissioner Will Johnson gave a history of the property on which the University is built. When purchased by SUSOM it was one of the largest pieces owned by a single individual - Leo Chance - which made the purchase of the parcel easy. Johnson quoted records which go back to the early 19th century when the land was actually sold for pieces of eight.

Knight, Assistant Dean Hugh Duckworth, Johnson, and Solagnier completed the ceremony with a “photo op” at the shovel. The shovel ceremony was only symbolic, since earthmovers from building Contractor HESCON have already been at work for several weeks on initial site preparation.
