THE BOTTOM - With St. Maarten and Statia day behind us the Government and people of Saba is now preparing to celebrate their national day.
Commissioner with responsibilities for Culture Ms. Lisa Hassell announced over the weekend that everything is just about ready for the 30th anniversary of Saba Day and also the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Saba Flag, Coat of Arms and the Saban anthem.
Commissioner Hassell announced that together with the Chief of Protocol a program for the official part of Saba Day has been compiled and distributed on the island and well as to all of our many friends overseas.
The highlights of this year celebration will be the official handing over of the renovated Police Station in The Bottom by the Minister of Justice and the State Secretary of Justice, the presentation of the first home that has been built under the Poverty Eradication Programme by his Excellency the Prime Minister of Netherlands Antilles and Mr. Herman George of Reda Sosial. Also forming part of the highlights will be the official opening of the Dancing Place Trail which will be done by the Commissioner of General Affairs Mr. Will Johnson.
Commissioner Hassell also told the SGIS that seeing that it is the 30th anniversary we have decided to make several adjustments to the official program compared to previous years such as instead of having the ecumenical service this year we will have a son of the soil deliver a blessing on the people of Saba. Father Simon Wilson will deliver the blessing on the celebration of Saba Day.
Commissioner Hassell also announce that this year the official ceremony has been cut down to accommodate the highlights of the day and also bearing in mind that several persons within the community has been complaining over the years that the official ceremony was lasting to long. We will be having a special treat for the children in eh morning hours on the grounds of the government Administration building.
To close of the celebration of the official part of Saba Day the Executive Council has decided this year to also organize an Award Ceremony on Friday evening at the Sunny Valley Youth Center in The Bottom starting at 8.00 p.m.
During this ceremony the Executive Council will be honoring several persons within the community that has contributed towards the island of Saba in one way or the other.
Amongst those being honored on Saba Day are our own Capt. Leo Chance for his outstanding contribution to the people of the Netherlands Antilles and Saba in particular during his years that he served as a Minister within several cabinets, also being honored is Mr. Max Nicholson for his contribution as an entrepreneur on the island and also for his service in the area of politics within the Netherlands Antilles and Saba, other recipients on Saba Day will be Mr. Diego Ignacio, Mrs. Lynne Johnson, Mr. Frank Hassell and "The Living Water Community on Saba".
Commissioner Hassell said that the evening will not end without the community having the opportunity to dance the night away at the Sunny Valley Youth Center with music being provided by "Tanny & the boys from St. Maarten along with one of our local dj's.
Commissioner Hassell said that the Award Ceremony is open to the general public of Saba however we would like a much as possible for this event to be for adults only as we will be treating the children in the morning hours. I would like to extend a public invitation to all Sabans and friends of Saba that are on the island to come out and let us celebrate our island day together in good spirit.
The theme for this year Saba Day celebration is "One Family" Working Togehter To Acheive Excellence.
I would also like to call on all of our people to start waving their flag as proud Sabans and I am calling on all motorist to start driving around the island waving their flag on their cars.
Let us make this Saba Day celebration something to remember Commissioner Hassell said.
The Master of Ceremonies for this year official ceremony will be Mr. Franklin Wilson.
