PHILIPSBURG - Plans to expand the police cells in St. Maarten are progressing, while the renovated police station in Saba is expected to be handed over December 3, announced State Secretary of Justice Erno Labega Sunday.

Labega said he had received the building plans for the expansion of the police cells at the station in Philipsburg from the architect last week. He said the next step would be submitting the plans to the Department of Public Works for a building permit. After the building permit has been secured, the bidding process for the project, financed through the Civil Defence programme, will take place. “We are moving on to the next phase of construction,” said Labega, adding that he was “happy” to have received the plans. The extra cells, to be built in the back of the station, will provide for 50 additional detainees. “The idea is to help Immigration so detainees can be kept separate from persons who have been accused of being involved in a crime,” he said. The project will cost about NAf. 2 million. The renovation of the police station in The Bottom, Saba, is “on schedule,” stated Labega. “I hope to turn it over on Saba Day, December 3,” he said. The project, which cost about NAf. 180,000, was financed through the Civil Defence programme. The police station was temporary relocated to the building next door during the renovation. The police force will continue to use this additional space after the renovation has been completed.
