PHILIPSBURG - Government has no intention of going into the airline business, said Commissioner of Aviation Affairs Sarah Wescott-Williams Wednesday after formally receiving the news that the Windward Islands would become the new owners of Windward Islands Airways International Winair.
“Time is not on our side and decisions have to be taken shortly,” said Wescott-Williams. She made clear at the weekly press briefing that it was not government’s intention to “get into the aviation business.” She said government’s role would be “interim,” aimed at “creating some room” to find an investor and start negotiations.
She stated that the Executive Council had received a copy of the decision of the Council of Ministers of last week Wednesday that negotiations with the Exel Group/Bonaire Participatie Maatschappij (BPM) had been terminated and that the shares would go to the Windward Islands.
She said that although the Executive Council hadn’t received a formal offer to take over the shares, and that Saba and St. Eustatius would each have a golden share, local government had “taken note” of that development.
As she already announced earlier this week, she explained that it was the intention to have research done on the legal and financial ramifications of taking over the shares from the Central Government, which last year signed a document with BPM/Exel for that company to run Winair’s operations in the future.
The island territory also wants due diligence to analyse the “actual situation” at the financially struggling airline. A legal counsel and members of Winair’s board and trustees will come together and report to government, Wescott-Williams said.
