PHILIPSBURG - Today, Friday, October 7, is the last day for unemployed persons interested in taking up careers in the jewellery and sales industry to sign up for the training programme organised by the Island Government in collaboration with Little Switzerland and Diamonds International.
So far some 30 to 35 persons have already registered for the programme, Labour Department Head Rafael Boasman told The Daily Herald Thursday. Those interested in signing up should submit their résumés and “letters of interest” to Linda Froston or Frank Lake at the Island Labour Department at Walter Nisbeth Road #57 by today.
Two information sessions have been scheduled to brief those who have already signed up for the programme. Boasman said the response to the initiative thus far had been very favourable. He said too that some motivated and excited candidates were among the applicants.
Those who are interested in pursuing careers in the jewellery and sales industry and who meet the criteria will be given preference for the programme. “Candidates should at least have high school diplomas or equivalents and have the interest to take up these areas as a profession,” he noted.
Given the number of applicants who have signed up for the programme, the possibility is being explored as to whether another training session can be held, but no definitive decision has yet been taken.
The programme is geared towards equipping unwaged locals with the tools needed to function in the jewellery and sales industry. The training programme will start on October 17. Classes will be held from 6:30pm to 8:30pm and will be for a total of 40 hours.
Regional Director for Little Switzerland Franck Saragossi and Diamonds International Managing Director Moshe Hakimi had said in an earlier statement that their companies were pleased to be part of the initiative.
Boasman and Labour Affairs Commissioner Louie Laveist initiated and endorsed the project.
The training will be held at both companies, with Little Switzerland focusing on customer service and selling skills, while Diamonds International will focus on product knowledge and other areas.
