PHILIPSBURG--The Save Emilio Wilson Estate Committee, which was started recently to campaign against any commercial development of the estate, has now become a foundation, officially named “Foundation for the management and conservation of the Emilio Wilson Estate.”
“Emilio Wilson Estate Foundation,” as it is dubbed by the persons involved, was officially incorporated last week and is headed by Jadira Veen, who is also the President of St. Maarten Pride Foundation.
The other board members are Wilhelm Andre Patrick (secretary), Iris Pisas-Arrindell (treasurer), George Aurelius Scot (board member) and Rueben J. Thompson (board member).
The mission of the foundation is “the protection, conservation and preservation of the entire Emilio Wilson Estate and all associated man-made as well as natural monuments in order to maintain the integrity of St. Maarten’s history, culture and natural environment for the benefit of present and future generations.”
According to the group, the overall goals of the foundation include obtaining the Emilio Wilson Estate property and to establish it as a natural, cultural and historical park for the benefit of present and future generations; to facilitate, stimulate and promote educational programmes and activities on the importance of the estate and to promote the preservation, conservation, restoration and study of historical monuments and artefacts present at the Emilio Wilson Estate.
The foundation is also aiming to preserve the island’s various species of flora and fauna found at the estate and to facilitate the establishment of environmentally friendly agricultural and aqua-cultural stations in specially designated areas of the estate.
The promotion of public awareness through the production of publications and media presentations, facilitation and organization of activities, educational programmes and assistance to archaeological and biological research on the Emilio Wilson Estate will also be undertaken.
To this end, the foundation will be seeking to obtain sustainable financial resources to achieve and manage its goals.
Additionally, the group will pursue co-management agreements with St. Maarten National Heritage Foundation, the Nature Foundation St. Maarten and Emilio Wilson Historical and Cultural Park Foundation, once the foundation has achieved structural and financial stability.
