Ouenniche: French side authorities trying to stifle Dutch side business

PHILIPSBURG - The recent move by the French side Customs authorities to seize cigarettes that did not carry a French health regulation warning has prompted St. Maarten Chamber of Commerce President Ludwig Ouenniche to call on the French authorities not to stifle Dutch side businesses.
The enforcement of the regulations that require products entering the French market to conform to French specifications cannot work in St. Maarten, as the island is small and there has always been the freedom of movement of goods and people. “We have the Treaty of Concordia that has been in existence for some 350 years that allows free movement,” he stated.
If the French side authorities insist on enforcing these regulations, the St. Maarten Chamber of Commerce will also take action by enforcing the regulations in place for the Dutch side, such as that all entities conducting business on this island of the island must be registered with the Dutch side Chamber of Commerce.
Additionally, the requirement that all company invoices must have the business registration number will also be enforced on the Dutch side as it is in the Netherlands, the chamber president stated. “Implementation has to be fair, as we are living on a small island.”
The move by the French authorities will eventually harm businesses on the Dutch side that conduct trade with the French side, as they will be forced either to start looking for French products to cater to the market or to withdraw from the market completely.
