PHILIPSBURG - French national team coach for Tae Kwon Do Henk Meijer, is expected to visit St. Maarten next year at the invitation of St. Maarten’s King Yen Tae Kwon Do School led by Grandmaster Theo Liu, to conduct several training sessions and seminars for the islands youth.
The aforementioned is a result of discussions Grandmaster Liu has had with Meijer while currently in Holland on a working visit. Several students, who attend the King Yen School and plan to continue with their studies in Holland, will now be able to also continue with their tae kwon do training as well.
“This arrangement will be done in cooperation with the Dutch Tae Kwon Do Association. Many of my students would like to continue with their training while studying abroad and now they will be able to do so.
“Meijer and I have also established an agreement where St. Maarten tae kwon do students will be able to travel to Holland and train under his guidance and expertise,” Grandmaster Liu stated on Sunday.
Henk Meijer, a former World Champion (1985, Seoul Korea), was the first non-Korean to become World Champion. In 1988 Meijer ended his active competition career.
In 1990 Meijer became coach of the Dutch National Tae Kwon Do Team. He performed this task for 14-years with the highlight being the participation of Dutch athletes in the Sydney 2000 Olympics, where the martial art sport became an official Olympic sport. He also trained Dutch athletes for Athens 2004.
