PHILIPSBURG - As a result of the devastating flash flooding that occurred on the weekend of July 30th on St. Maarten many people in our community have sustained extensive damages to their homes and property leaving behind a great sense of loss and many things that need to be replaced. Rebuilding all that has been lost is a big challenge for many and even impossible for some.
For this reason the St. Maarten Hospitality & Trade Association and its members have coordinated with the St. Peters Community Council to help residents to rebuild and replace what was lost in the flood. Through the assistance of our members, we were able to gather many items and donate these to families who have sustained serious damage as a result of the flood. We collected three trucks loads including beds, household appliances, sheets, towels and furniture. Further cash donations were used to buy plywood and additional beds. The material was delivered to the St. Peters Community Council who is assisting in distributing them to those most in need.

According to President of the St Peters Community Council; The undertaking by the SHTA and the tremendously positive response by its members affirms the commitment that the corporate community has in ensuring that those in need can get the necessary assistance.
SPCC commends Giselle Dirckx and especially Zuleima Salmon for coordinating a great relief effort to benefit our community. Such a large project shows that our Youngsters are capable of doing great things once given the opportunity. As an intern at SHTA Zuleima has definitely worked hard at coordinating the project from contacting the businesses, getting them committed to assisting with picking up of the donated items.
SPCC will now continue with the distribution aspect of the entire relief effort. Items collected will be donated to needy residents in both the St Peters/Marigot Hill as well as Zagersgut area. After being contacted by Michael Ferrier of SHTA to see how the organization could help residents in St Peters/Marigot Hill and after assessing the situation in Zagersgut, the Council had decided to coordinate the relief for residents of both districts. Considering that there is no active Council in Zagersgut and seeing that this area’s residents had suffered even more damage than St Peters/Marigot Hill, we felt the right thing to do was to collect items for this district as well; stated President of SPCC Rolando Tobias.
On behalf of the residents of both St. Peters/Marigot Hill and Zagersgut, the Board of the St Peters Community Council extends sincere appreciation to the SHTA and its 24 members who have contributed towards this relief effort.
The SHTA would also like to thank all of its members that were able to contribute to this effort, namely:
