St. Peters residents get much-needed aid

PHILIPSBURG - Several residents in the St. Peters/Marigot Hill area received much-needed appliances as a result of funds received by the St. Peters Community Council (SPCC) through a joint effort of Commissioner Roy Marlin, the community council and several good corporate citizens.

SPCC members, using delivery trucks, handed over beds, stoves, refrigerators and clothing items to more than 10 residents in the district Saturday afternoon. The items were purchased by the council from NAf. 14,350 received from the business community.

The aid was a means of alleviating the plight of residents who had lost most of their household items during the flooding of Saturday, July 30. Criteria were set for residents who needed relief and a system was put in place to ensure the transparency of the collecting of funds and distribution of the household items.

One resident was heard saying, “It is as if Christmas has come early this year,” as she received her items and expressed gratitude to the Council and businesses who had made the provision of the household items possible.

SPCC President Rolando Tobias explained that the council had attempted to assist those residents with the most urgent needs. However, he emphasise that other residents had suffered less severe losses, but also needed assistance.

The relief aid forms completed by the other residents have been referred to the Social Welfare Department for further processing. The Council has also provided an assessment to other organisations that have expressed interest in assisting with household items for residents in need.

SPCC Vice President Maurice Lake said he was pleased with the process of providing the relief items so far. He was especially pleased with the honesty of residents within the community, who understood and appreciated what the council was doing and made the task of selecting those who were really in urgent need very easy.
