GEORGETOWN (GINA) - As Hindus in Guyana begin the colourful celebrations of Phagwah, President Bharrat Jagdeo joined them at the Dharmic Sabha Kendra Mandir, Prashad Nagar, Georgetown, last evening.
The Dharmic Sabha hosted its annual Phagwah Mela and Bazaar, which featured a rich cultural programme, including songs and dances depicting the Indian culture. The event began around 18:00 hrs and continued way into the night. Several Indian wear and delicacies were on sale as a cross section of society turned out to support the evening, including Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud.
The President interacted with persons at the event before stopping to enjoy the cultural performances.
Phagwah will be celebrated around the world on March 26.
Phagwah (Holi) marks the beginning of the new year of the Hindu calendar. At this time people spread colourful powder on each other as well as spray perfume. It is a festival, which also marks the triumph of good over evil.
Ushering the New Year of the Hindu calendar, the Dharmic Sabha Kendra usually hosts a Holi Ustav.
