by Saba Government Information Services

THE BOTTOM - Commissioner with responsibilities for Youth Affairs and Education Ms. Lisa Hassell on Tuesday afternoon met with Mr. Marcel Pinedo of Brasami on Curacao.

Mr. Pinedo is on a fact finding mission to the island at the expense of the Island Government of Saba meeting with stakeholders regarding several problems surrounding mainly the youth of the island and looking into ways and means on how they could be of some assistance to the island of Saba.

Commissioner Hassell said that in the discussion with Mr. Pinedo she has determined that the problem that we are confronted with has mostly to do with behavioral problems and Mr. Pinedo feels that the problems can be solved based on the size of the island. I feel very optimistic now that we have met and discussed the plans on how we can work together in the general interest of the island and especially of the youth of the island.

Commissioner Hassell however made it very clear that the problems that we are being confronted with does not only concern government, but each and everyone has its role to play in trying to find solutions towards the youth of the island.

Government will do what it has to do but it also involves parents, community groups, the clergy, school boards and the entire community. Waiting for government to come with certain initiatives should not be looked at as the first alternative. Each and everyone has their own responsibility in trying to help bring about change.

Government of course is there to help and assist but the entire community has a role to play and together we will be able to accomplish a lot.

Commissioner Hassell said that on Thursday she together with the other members of the Executive Council will be continuing with a meeting which started last week with the School board for secondary education and during that meeting some of the behavioral problems is expected to be also discussed.

As Executive Council we are very concerned with the latest developments surrounding the youth of the island and the problems that they are being confronted with and we have to come up with solutions. Parents will have to also start playing a much bigger role in their children's future when it comes to education etc. Commissioner Hassell stated.
