BRIDGETOWN (BGIS) - A handbook on nutrition and HIV/AIDS will soon be in the hands of regional health care workers and caregivers to assist their efforts in encouraging healthy lifestyles for persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs).
While the document has already been officially launched in several countries, its actual release throughout the English-speaking Caribbean will follow a final launch here in Barbados at an HIV/AIDS Nutrition training workshop for health care workers at the Sherbourne Conference Centre, on January 18.
Developers of the booklet, the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute (CFNI) located in Jamaica, have joined with Barbados’ Ministry of Health to host the workshop which has as its key theme the introduction of the publication called: “Healthy Eating for Better Living: A Manual on Nutrition and HIV/AIDS for healthcare workers in the Caribbean”.
Listed among the topics for discussion are: ‘Planning Menus for Persons Living With HIV/AIDS - children, teenagers, adults’; ‘People with HIV/AIDS Have Special Needs’; ‘Food Safety and Hygiene’; and ‘Coping with Nutrition Problems – related to HIV/AIDS’.
Main facilitators from the CFNI include Public Health Nutritionists, Geoffrey Xuereb and Dietician June Holdipp. The Ministry of Health will be represented by Health Education Officer, Denise Carter-Taylor; Dietitian, Stacia Whittaker; and Nutritionists from the National Nutrition Centre David Rawlins, Donna Barker and Avia Callender-Medford.
Minister of Health, Jerome Walcott, will deliver the feature address at the opening ceremony of the three-day workshop on Tuesday, January 18, at 9.00 a.m. while Chairman of the National HIV/AIDS Commission, Dr. Carol Jacobs, and Director of the CFNI, Dr. Fitzroy Henry, will make remarks.
