CWU & Port of Belize Limited reach agreement

BELMOPAN - The Belize Ports Authority announces that effective today, December 3, 2004, the Port of Belize Limited has assumed responsibility for the provision of stevedoring services at the Port of Belize.

At a meeting held this afternoon between officials from the Christian Workers Union and the Port of Belize Limited, both parties agreed to work towards the development of a collective bargaining agreement. For the process to move forward, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed that establishes the framework for the development of a formal working relationship between the Port of Belize Limited and the Stevedores.

Both parties agreed that the Stevedores will sign-up with the Ports of Belize Limited and continue providing their services during this process.

The Hon. Ainslie Leslie chaired the meeting which was held at the office of the Ministry of Energy and Communications in Belmopan.

Minister Leslie reminded both parties of the need to have a competitive Port that provides cost effective services to all Belizeans. Officials of the Belize Ports Authority observed the meeting.

Signing the Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of the Ports of Belize Limited was Luke Espat, Francine Waight and Ray Guerrero and signing on behalf of the Christian Workers Union was President, Antonio Gonzalez, Delvin Munoz and Raymond McKay Jr.

Witness to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding was Labour Commissioner, Mr. Paul Williams.
