BRIDGETOWN (BGIS) - Government has pledged its continued support for the development of the visual arts in Barbados.
This reassurance has come from Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Senator John Williams, who was at the time speaking at the inaugural exhibition to mark the reopening of the Queen’s Park Gallery yesterday.
He noted that the closure of that facility, though unavoidable at the time, was a great loss to local artists as well as art lovers.
“Queen’s Park is a national institution beloved by all Barbadians. The park has nostalgic association for older Barbadians … it houses an important centre of culture, in the form of the Queen’s Park Gallery, the Steel Shed and the Daphne Joseph Hackett Theatre.”
In relation to the cultural sector, Senator Williams said policies were being implemented to facilitate the development of cultural industries as catalysts for growth.
He noted that a creative centre was on the cards to assist with the design and originality of local souvenir items. “The initial draft was submitted by the consultants and the final report is expected to be handed in by the end of the month,” Senator Williams said.
