Will it be a Royal Resort time share property or a Hard Rock Hotel

Lionstone Group must decide within 30 days

ORANJESTAD - The Aruba Government informed the Lionstone Group in writing that they have one month to decide which project they wish to execute.

The Minister of Transport and Tourism, Mr. Edison Briesen informed that the Government has completed the process with the Lionstone Group. However, the group now wishes to develop another hotel next to the Bushiri Beach Resort.

Three weeks ago the Minister had a conversation with the operators concerned – Hard Rock Hotels – that in fact does not have many hotels. If this one is realized it will be their first in the Caribbean, Central and South America.

Fact is that this hotel chain receives a considerable number of guests each year and although they are a small chain they target the high end of the market. This pattern fits in Aruba’s strategy for the tourism industry.

Considering the fact that the Lionstone Group has requested permission to build a time share property of 300 units (600 rooms) and now a resort of 225 rooms in order for the operator to obtain a casino license, the Government approached them in writing for a clarification.

The original conditions of the Government state that they need to have a 400 room property in order to qualify for a casino license. According to Minister Briesen the group must now decide which way they wish to go:

• A time share resort with 200 units (400) rooms or,
• Develop a Hard Rock Hotel, starting with 225 rooms and expand to 400 in order to qualify for the casino license.

This is a decision that the Lionstone Group has to take, and the Government granted them a month to do so. Both groups were in Aruba and had conversations with the Department of Labor and construction companies so that they will be ready to mobilize once a decision is taken. If the project becomes a Royal Resort time share property the intention is to demolish the existing Bushiri Beach Resort building and replace it with a two-wing structure of 200 units each, according to Briesen. The project should be completed by the end of next year.

The execution of this project goes hand in hand with the relocation of the cargo operations of the Oranjestad harbor to Barcadera. A presentation of the latter project was given yesterday by the Spanish group Alatec. More news will follow as it becomes available.
