ORLANDO, FL - Former West Indies top wicket-taker Lance Gibbs and Guyana's number one stand-up comedian Ken Corsbie will be in Orlando for Guyana Night -A Celebration of Guyanese Comedy, Culture and Cuisine- to be held at Russell's Restaurant, 5370 West Colonial Drive, on Wednesday, November 3, 2004, to raise funds for the hurricane relief efforts being undertaken by the Conference of Caribbean Organizations of Central Florida.
Gibbs will spearhead a panel of Guyanese who will engage in 'ole talk' and interact with the audience to recall significant happenings, places and characters in Guyana's history. Other members of the panel are former Guyana Defence Force officer Vibart Boodhoo, designer Godfery Chin, journalist Wesley Kirton and radio personality Bobby Veira.
Corsbie will put on a 45-minute one-man comedy act which is expected to have Guyanese "cracking up with laugh" as he reminds them of their youthful days " in the mud".
Guyana Nite is being produced by the Orlando Posse- Godfrey Chin, John "Slingshot' Drepaul, Chico Khan and Wesley Kirton. The posse came together earlier this year to produce the Awards Dinner program for Guyfolk Fest, held Labor Day weekend in New York.
The event is sponsored by the Caribbean Sun newspaper and Russell's Restaurant in association with a number of co-sponsors including the Alliance of Guyanese Expatriates (AGE), the Association of Concerned Guyanese (ACG) and Laparkan Shipping.
Several Guyanese artistes in Central Florida including calypsonian Slingshot, Qyneares- Mystical Queen of Kulture, the Maya Dancers, Orlando Tassa Riddim and Alan Khan along with Winston Duggin from Miami have donated their talent.
Also coming to Orlando for this Celebration of Guyana is leading Guyanese artist Tony Phillips who currently lives in Australia. He will mount an exhibition of his works and has also donated a painting which will be raffled that night as part of the fund-raising effort.
Tony Phillips was taught drawing in his early childhood. His introduction to oil painting suited his style and creativity, culminating in a series of highly successful joint and one man exhibitions within the region.
His versatility and craftsmanship is astounding with the use of strong, bold colour and robust brush marks the hallmark of his work.
Tony has received international acclaim and has had a variety of commissions. His works are held in many private collections around the world.
The night's program will get underway at 7pm and will provide an opportunity for the audience to be involved in 'ole time gaff' about all things Guyanese. Tickets are currently on sale at Caribbean restaurants and food stores throughout Central Florida.
