Yam Festival Takes It Back To Roots

QUEENS, N.Y. (CaribPR Newswire) - Fans of holistic Caribbean foods are in for a treat this summer, when the second annual 'JERK, ROOTS and YAM Festival USA,' gets underway in Queens, New York and the Miami, Florida.

The event, set for August Sunday, August 15 at the Roy Wilkins Park in Queens and on Sunday, August 22 at the Hialeah Park in Miami, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., will feature an exciting showcase of jerk foods, roots drinks and other roots related products, yams and yam by- products, a mini trade/consumer show, displaying processed foods by reputable companies.

Festival goers will be able to choose from jerk lobster, jerk conch, jerk tofu, jerk yam and jerk ice cream to name a few, prepared by local vendors as well as participants from Jamaica's Boston Jerk Festival, the largest food festival in Jamaica.

The Southern Trelawny Environmental Agency, producers of the very successful annual Yam Festival in Trelawny, Jamaica, will be on hand to demonstrate the various ways to use preserve and select yams while attendees will be able to bite into delicious yam breads, yam buns, yam cakes and yam pizza while sipping on yam wines or licking on yam ice cream.

Attendees will also get herbal advice from herbalists, nutritionists and holistic medicine providers while also stopping by the health care section for health screenings or advice on reflexology; massage therapy, physical therapy and health screenings.

And there will be live entertainment for children, with an amusement area, and reggae, calypso and gospel performances from several acts for the adults including the Mighty Sparrow and Ken Boothe.

Over 10,000 persons, from a cross-section of the New York and South Florida communities, are expected to attend the festival. Event Organizer, Wayne Morrison, says, it's a great way for sponsors to reach this diverse group at a cost-effective price. Sponsors joining forces to date are: Air Jamaica, Victoria Mutual Building Society, Jamaica Tourist Board, Sunset Beach Resort And Spa, Western Union, Grace Foods, Transcontinental Express Shippers, Caribbean Immigrant Services, Hardbeatnews, CaribPR and Rolmodel Media.
