~Cherrianne Dangleben crowned 2008 Junior Carnival Queen~
BUSH ROAD - Retaining his title as St. Maarten Carnival Junior Road March King was Raheen “Mighty Hefe Junior” Frederick, who reclaimed the crown for his song “Jump and Wave.” Taking the crown for the 2008 Junior Carnival Queen was Cherrianne Dangleben.
Taking the crown for this year’s Junior Calypso with 241 points was Rumini “Young Calix” Rogers for his song “Education is the key,” which called on youngsters to reconsider dropping out of school. Local professionals in the medical and Justice fields were brought into his rendition to portray his message.
Last year’s Junior Calypso Queen Roxanne “Lil Roxxy” Webster was this year’s first runner-up with 239 points for her song “Manners.” She cried out to all St. Maarteners to recover manners, the virtue that once made St. Maarten stand out.
In the second runner-up position with 226 points was Errissa “Lady Upsetter” Cozier for her song “Trouble in the school,” which challenged the local education system to bring back old values in the schools.
Contestants Nadege Arrindell and Romencia Fleming took the first and second runner-up positions respectively in the Junior Queen Pageant. Junior Queen Dangleben also received the sashes for Miss Photogenic, Best Introduction, Best Talent and Best Costume. Arrindell received sashes for Best Interview and Best Cultural Wear, while Fleming was sashed for Miss Amity.
Ann Akevng, who designed Dangleben’s costume, was recognised as the Best Costume Designer. The costume was a tribute to the steel pan. Wings were attached to the back of the traditional wear of a steel pan player, which was designed in the shape of the inside of a steel pan.
Randolph Scott, who designed Arrindell’s Cultural Wear, was recognised as the Best Cultural Designer. The cultural outfit was a tribute to the tamarind tree and the many uses of the tree in the olden days were highlighted during Arrindell’s presentation.
Judging the pageant were Choir Director Esther Davis-Roach, TV host Audrey Jack of “All Access with Audrey Jack” and Police public relations officer Inspector Ricardo Henson.
Judging the Junior Calypso and Road March competition were Marvin “King Stunky” Dollison, Erno “Young Dow” York and Ricky “Mighty Phox” Bertie.
Other competitors in the Calypso and Road March competitions were Denicia “Lil Blossom” Martinbor and Reno “Lil Reno” Brooks, son of well-known calypsonian “Beau Beau.”
