Maurice Steenbergen is new UTS Commercial Manager

PHILIPSBURG - Maurice Steenbergen is the new United Telecommunication Services (UTS) Chippie Northeastern Caribbean Commercial Manager. He replaces Christina Sprock, who after five years with Chippie is now General Manager of major wholesaler Manrique Capriles.

Steenbergen is now responsible for the quality of Customer Service, Marketing, residential and business sales of UTS-Chippie services throughout the Northeastern Caribbean.

He comes from a background of product development with major telecommunications companies in Europe and has spent the last 15 months at UTS, where he said he has had an opportunity to understand the inner workings of UTS both locally and at corporate levels in Curaçao.

He said Chippie had positioned itself well within the St. Maarten market through the input of Sprock and her hard working team, which made his taking over an easy task as he only needed to continue the work.

He said his real challenge would be to make the other islands that would join the Chippie family, including St. Kitts, Nevis and the French islands, and Suriname where Chippie has just landed, as successful as St. Maarten.

He said the main challenge is the fact that the culture is different on each island and that means marketing strategies have to be tweaked to suit the different markets.

Thankfully, Chippie has a central marketing department that works with the different islands and, based on the experience already gathered from the islands entered, is well on the way to solidifying its position within the entire Caribbean as the preferred carrier for GSM service, Steenbergen stated.

Some things, such as the currently running promotional raffle organised by Chippie in collaboration with Caribbean Auto Sales and the AIDS Foundation, can and do work on different islands. He said the raffle of the car, in which subscribers simply have to text 6565 with their best guess of how many condoms are stored in an SUV parked outside UTS’ Philipsburg office, was a good way of showing how committed the company was to its people.

Steenbergen said there had been many texts to that number from Chippie subscribers already and with the planned rally during the weekend in which Chippie and the AIDS Foundation will be going around the island giving out gifts and information about HIV/AIDS, the interest would become even greater.

He said only he knew the actual number of condoms and no one connected with UTS or Caribbean Auto Sales or their closest relatives was eligible to win. He said, “This is completely open and fair, and everyone has an equal chance to win. In fact, I have put the actual amount in writing at a local notary’s office in a sealed envelope, which they have in their vault.”

The cost to SMS your guess of how many condoms are in the SUV is NAf. 1 and subscribers can enter as many times as they wish.

Subscribers in St. Maarten/St. Martin, Saba and Statia are eligible to win and part of the proceeds of the raffle goes to the AIDS Foundation.

The envelope will be opened on World AIDS Day, December 1, when the car will be raffled. The winner must give the exact number of condoms in the SUV. If there is no one with the exact number, then the number closest to but not greater than the correct number will be chosen. If for any reason there is more than one person in contention to win based on the rules, the notary office will select the winner.

Steenbergen said that with this addition to the Chippie family and his promotion came the continued drive for success, as was the case with Sprock. He said Chippie was working hard to ensure it would keep up with current international telecommunications market trends that saw third generation network, UMTS, mobile e-mailing, and Voice Over IP as being the way of the future in communication.
