PHILIPSBURG - Finalising several policies to better streamline the operations of the Department of Economic Affairs and government in general is being worked on by Commissioner Maria Buncamper-Molanus.
The commissioner completed her familiarization rounds and is now up to speed with policies that need to be finalised and implemented.
Discussions and decisions are in the offing for the draft terms of reference for sports policy, draft island wide beach policy, draft public vending policy ad the proposal to amend the policy on business opening hours. There is also a proposal to revise tax holidays, and moratoriums.
As all of the policies are in the draft stages, the commissioner did not give details on the contents and possible consequences for businesses and the public in general.
To cope with the new responsibilities and work the adoption of the policies will create, the Economic Affairs Department has submitted a proposal to government to hire more staff.
Buncamper-Molanus said additional staff is needed to improve productivity and efficiency of the department. She pointed out that it is common knowledge that requests for business and director’s licences are not processed in a timely manner.
A study on the department’s staff productivity was carried out earlier this year and will be presented to the Executive Council in the coming weeks. The study identifies the bottlenecks in the department and possible solutions.
A standardised automated system for the department should be in place by January 2008. This should shorten time spent on re-creating business and director’s licences by generating a checklist and a quick guide to government’s policy on various items.
