ArkeFly starts direct weekly flights Dec 2

PHILIPSBURG - St. Maarten can expect more Dutch visitors when ArkeFly begins a weekly direct flight from Amsterdam on Sunday, December 2. Promotion for the flight is ongoing, with funding input from the tourism budget.

A 272 seat Boeing 767 aircraft will be used for the special charter flight that will stop here before heading to Curaçao and then back to the Netherlands on Sunday.

ArkeFly/TUI Nederland Product Manager for the Caribbean Karin van der Laan told The Daily Herald the intention was to operate the flight year-round. However, the destination needs to be better promoted in the Netherlands to make the flight a feasible venture.

She said the ABC islands [Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao] were better known in the Netherlands, especially because they had tourist desks there, while St. Maarten has none. More marketing to highlight St. Maarten’s Caribbean flavour is necessary, she added.

Van der Laan and Lisette de Jongh of TUI Nederland Product Management Long Haul are on-island ironing out details associated with the new flight. St. Maarten Tourist Bureau representatives Edward Dest and William Bell are assisting the airline officials.

Tourism Commissioner Roy Marlin met with Van der Laan in the Netherlands last week to get an overview of ArkeFly operations and marketing effort.

ArkeFly vacation packages start at 699 euros and include round-trip airfare, accommodation at a selection of hotels on the Dutch and French sides, and other amenities.

The flight details and packages are advertised in the company’s magazine Holland International winter edition that was released last week. For more information visit www.tui.nl
