Enerserve production unit functioning again

PHILIPSBURG - Residents of St. Peters and other areas affected by just over two days of water shortage breathed a sigh of relief as water started to flow through their taps again Wednesday afternoon.
Managing Director of water distributor GEBE William Brooks said in a Government Information Service (GIS) release that he had been informed by water producer Enerserve that it had completed repairs to its broken water production unit Wednesday afternoon.
The unit had been off-line since Friday due to a damaged starter. A new one arrived from the United States Tuesday and was installed yesterday.
The unit was put back on-line and is producing the 4,000 cubic metres of water needed daily to regularise water supply. Due to the breakdown, the Enerserve water plant in Cay Bay was only producing 10,400 cubic meters of water per day, far below the demand of the Dutch side of the island.
Commissioner responsible for GEBE Roy Marlin told GIS he has been monitoring developments closely and the new water supply agreement signed recently between the Island Government and Air-Fin would bring on-line an additional 3,500 cubic metres per day as of November, to meet the current demands.
“The Enerserve water plant has two transformers, but one is being under-utilised. There needs to be a redistribution of electricity and this should bring on-line an additional 1,500 cubic meters. When you lose approximately 25 per cent of your water production it will have an impact, but all efforts are being made by those responsible to restore production,” Marlin stated.
Brooks said, “GEBE’s responsibility is solely the distribution of water, and we have been working diligently over the years to repair water distribution lines in order to cut down on the amount of water that is wasted. We empathise with consumers and urge them in the coming weeks to manage their water usage until the company that is responsible for producing water can find a solution.”
