GREAT BAY (GIS) – Gebe Managing Director William Brooks on Wednesday afternoon was informed that one of the water production units of water provider Enerserve came back online at around 3.40pm Wednesday afternoon.

This should alleviate some of the water problems that residents have been experiencing since when the production unit went down.

The water production unit that broke down produced 4000 cubic meters of water per day. It broke down last week Friday according to an Enerserve representative; however the company has been working diligently to resolve the problem.

The representative told the Government Information Service (GIS) on Wednesday that a starter for the water production unit was damaged due to a burnt wire. A new starter was purchased from the U.S. which arrived on the island Tuesday.

The Enerserve Water Plant in Cay Bay since the production unit went down last Friday, has been producing 10,400 cubic meters of water per day which is far below the demand of the island.

The Enerserve representative told GIS that the water situation will not improve much even though the production unit is back up and running.

Commissioner responsible for Energy Affairs Roy Marlin told GIS that he has been monitoring developments closely and that the new water supply agreement signed recently between the Island Government and Air-Fin will bring online approximately an additional 3500 cubic meters per day per November thereby meeting current demand and that of the future.

“The situation is of concern when any massive breakdown takes place. The Enerserve water plant has two transformers, but one is being under utilized and there needs to be a redistribution of electricity and this should bring online an additional 1500 cubic meters. When you loose approximately 25 per cent of your water production it will have an impact, but all efforts are being made by those responsible to restore production,” Commissioner Marlin stated on Wednesday.

“We are pleased to learn that the unit is back in operation. Gebe’s responsibility is solely the distribution of water, and we have been working diligently over the years to repair water distribution lines in order to cut down on the amount of water that runs away.

“Gebe workers also assisted Enerserve with trying to find a solution to the problem. We empathize with water consumers and urge them in the coming weeks to manage their water usage until the company that is responsible for producing water can find a solution,” Gebe Managing Director Brooks told GIS on Wednesday.
