Simpson Bay Bridge Authority request mariners and water sports users to act responsibly
by St. Maarten Government Information Service (GIS)

GREAT BAY, St. Maarten (GIS) – Managing Director of the Simpson Bay Lagoon Authority Corporation, Russell Voges is requesting all small craft users as well as personal watercraft owners (jet skis, wave runners) to observe maritime safety measures when in the vicinity of the Simpson Bay Bridge.

“Watercraft such as kayaks, rhinos, jet skis, dinghies and tenders continuously cross the bridge channel during the bridge opening which hampers and endangers the regular traffic of the larger vessels.

“The bridge openings have to be within the shortest time span possible and we ask the crossing vessels to cue up and speed up as quickly as possible. It is strictly forbidden for these smaller boats and crafts to be in the bridge channel during opening times,” Managing Director of the Simpson Bay Lagoon Authority Corporation, Russell Voges told the Government Information Service (GIS) on Tuesday.

The same can also be said for the cement and sand cargo freighters, barges and tug boats that dock at the BBW freight harbor at the entrance of the bridge channel.

“They are also not allowed to maneuver in the channel during opening times. I am appealing to all companies that utilize the BBW dock nearby as well as those who rent small craft to tourists and others to inform their customers about this. As stakeholders we all have to work together in order to maintain safety of our waterways at all times,” Voges said on Tuesday.
