Garbage contracts extended, new routing still in the works
by The Daily Herald

PHILIPSBURG - All details of the new garbage contracts, including new routes, have not been fully worked out as yet. In the interim, daily collection is carried out by current contractors.

Head of Public Works Maintenance Department Claudius Buncamper told The Daily Herald the contracts expired on June 30 but temporary contract extensions were granted to contractors.

The temporary extensions caused some problems with collection on Sunday and Monday especially in Oyster Pond, Cul de Sac, Middle Region and Dutch Quarter. Buncamper said Meadowlands workers were not familiar with their routes but this has been ironed out and collection should be back to normal in the coming days.

Those areas used to be serviced by Bunchie’s garbage collection company but under the temporary agreement, Meadowlands is now responsible.

Asked when the new garbage collection system and routing system will come into effect, Buncamper said he could not give a specific time, but work continues.

According to information reaching this newspaper, the new plan may be scrapped soon due to its hefty price tag. The plan was created over a year ago and bids have already been submitted for contractors to comply with the new specifications such as smaller trucks and new routes.

Implementing the recommendations of the plan will reportedly cost government some NAf. 20 million initially and a similarly high price to maintain the system after it is in place.

At present, government spends about NAf. 3 million annually on garbage collection.
