PHILIPSBURG - The Prosecutor’s Office has requested an eight-day extension of the detention of G.Y. who has been arrested as a suspect in human trafficking.
G.Y. was arrested last week in connection with the illegal transportation of mainly Chinese nationals to the island, some of whom have reportedly been smuggled from here into the United States.
And, reliable reports reaching The Daily Herald Monday said a very high ranking officer in the police force here in St. Maarten had been identified by the suspect as one of his accomplices.
Chief Prosecutor Taco Stein would not comment on allegations that a top cop had been fingered and had been questioned as the probe continued. He would only say that the matter had the full attention of the Prosecutor’s Office.
However, Stein reported that the request for an extension of G.Y’s detention had been submitted to the Investigating Judge on Monday.
