CTO will confer on Sekou, Award of Excellence

PHILIPSBURG - This year the Caribbean Tourism Organization will honor Lasana Sekou during its annual Caribbean Week, a designated time for the organization and its members and associates to provide a platform for the sale of Caribbean Vacations, to create events that attract positive media attention for the Caribbean, to provide opportunities for all members to promote their individual products and services, and to generate revenue.

Commissioner of Tourism, Theodore Heyliger hails Sekou recognition as a significant high point. “What Lasana Sekou has achieved is incalculable. He is someone who produces excellent work in many facets. We can only uphold him as a man of excellence.”

Sekou is well known for his extraordinary work in the communication and publishing fields. He has garnered many regional and international awards, including being knighted by Her Royal Majesty Queen Beatrix.

The event takes place in New York, which becomes for one week the center of Caribbean destinations. This week is filled with all sorts of activities geared towards improving the quantative and qualitative results.

Fulfilling the CTO’s goals of being the premier regional tourism association, comprised of government and private sector operatives in the tourism industry across the Caribbean, the CTO besides, collects and disseminates research and data on the development of the regional industry.

This year Lasana Sekou will be honored. As many know, Sekou is a poet and publisher. He has worked with notable figure as George Lamming, Kamau Brathwaite, and Amiri Baraka. He has written 13 books, and published over 50 titles.

Born on Aruba in 1959, attended elementary school on St. Maarten, acquired a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from State University of New York (SB), and a Master’s degree in Mass Communication from Howard University.

The criteria for the awards is as follows: presented to individuals whose work honors the Caribbean by Successfully and innovatively utilizing their talents and influence to promote the destination/Caribbean, and in keeping with the Organization’s mission, result in quantifiable positive impact on tourism to the region.
