GREAT BAY (GIS) – Governor Franklyn E. Richards left the island on Saturday for a two week working visit to Holland. Richards will be meeting with the Association of Netherlands Municipalities (VNG); attend a ceremony of the “Zilveren Anjer,” of the Prins Bernard Cultuurfonds where Her Majesty Queen Beatrix will also be in attendance; and will also participate in an Executive Administrative Refresher Course.
The various Governors of the five Antillean islands have been invited by the VNG to discuss the functioning of the organization. They will also visit several municipalities and meet with the State Secretary for Kingdom Relations Ank Bijleveld.
The VNG is an umbrella organization established in 1912 representing 458 (2006) Dutch municipalities geared towards the improvement in the quality of local government. The VNG promotes and discusses the associations’ interests with the Dutch Central Government, Parliament, European institutions and other public organizations. These institutions also consult with the association frequently. The Netherlands Antilles and Aruba are members of the VNG.
The Prins Bernard Fonds was established in 1940 in London by Prins Bernhard. The organization has evolved since then to where it currently provides financial assistance to approximately 4000 projects in the area of culture development and nature preservation mainly in Holland.
Her Majesty Queen Beatrix will present the “Zilveren Anjers” on June 7 at Palace Noordeinde. The three persons who have been selected to receive the award are Piet Bos, Klaas Bruinsma and Mart Groentjes.
The “Zilveren Anjers” have been awarded since the 1950s to persons who voluntarily dedicate their time to the preservation of culture and nature in Holland, the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. Until his death in 2005, Prins Bernhard personally presented the award. In 2006 Queen Beatrix took over the task.
Governor Richards is expected to return to the island on June 13.
