PHILIPSBURG - Local authorities have detained a Chinese man G.Y. in connection with an ongoing investigation into allegations about human trafficking. And, according to well-placed sources, at least one police official has been implicated.
According to the reports, the prime suspect, who is said to have links with a local brothel, collaborated with other persons and they orchestrated a human trafficking ring that operated with links to St. Thomas/St. Croix, St. Maarten/St. Martin and the US mainland.
The ring was reportedly involved in trafficking in Chinese and Philippine girls in a lucrative market.
Chief Prosecutor Taco Stein confirmed on Thursday that G.Y. had been in custody for several days in connection with allegations that he was involved in the trafficking of persons.
When asked whether it was true that a police official had been implicated in the alleged criminal activity, Stein said he had no comment. “We are going to keep it that way for now, because we are still investigating,” he said.
