PHILIPSBURG - Recently Animals R Friends has become a member society of the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA).

Among other things, WSPA will provide assistance in case of disaster, such as a hurricane as well as assist their member societies with their local campaigns. In preparing for the upcoming hurricane season, WSPA sent Animals R Friends posters, which remind the public to include their animals in hurricane preparations.

Animals R Friends will distribute these posters to several public places during the coming weeks as part of their hurricane preparedness for animal’s campaign. Animals R Friends would like to remind the public to include their animals in the preparations for a hurricane. They advise to include your pet in your emergency food supply and water supply, be sure that you have enough medications and a first- aid kit for your pets. The kit should also have tick and flea medication and anti-heartworm tablets.

Always keep an identification tag on your pet, even those who stay indoors. Veterinary clinics on St. Maarten provide these tags for free. Keep current photos of your pets with you, in case they get lost. During the actual hurricane never leave a pet outside during the storm and definitely not on a chain.

Bring them into the house with you or if that’s not possible place them in another safe spot inside, for instance a concrete garage. If you have to evacuate your home never leave your pets behind.

Make sure to check in time if the shelters accept your pets. If not take the animals to a pre-arranged safe location for instance with friends or family. Be aware that even family pets may bite if they are very frightened.

Furthermore keep a leash or rope on hand as well as a portable carrier, towels and litter/newspapers. Know the numbers of the local veterinarians or the local animal foundations in case you do lose a pet or have an emergency.
