PHILIPSBURG - Disfigured by her husband’s attempt to end her life by setting her on fire after years of domestic abuse, American Yvette Cade has an incredible story of survival to tell the world.

Cade’s story stunned all those who heard it or saw it on television and she has been invited by Peridot Road Foundation to speak here on Saturday, December 2, about her ordeal and of her life since. Her trip to St. Maarten will be her first outside of the United States to talk about her experience.

“The ordeal of Cade could happen to any woman or man, regardless of colour or creed, regardless of social circumstance, anywhere in the world. Like millions of people worldwide, I, too, watched in horror the images on my TV screen, as the estranged husband of Yvette walked into her work place and doused her with a flammable solution and lit her on fire,” said founder and one of the leaders of Peridot Road Foundation Gracita Arrindell.

Having suffered third degree burns over 60 per cent of her body, Cade lived to tell her story to the world. “While she still has to undergo many and oftentimes painful reconstructive surgeries, her physical scars do not cover her inner beauty and her will to be more than just a survivor of domestic violence,” explained Arrindell, who is also the leader of People’s Progressive Alliance (PPA)

To bring about greater awareness about the plight of abused women and children, Cade has been talking about her ordeal on programmes such as Larry King Live, Oprah and Nancy Grace.

Peridot, a non-profit foundation established to promote the awareness of domestic violence, has invited several local and foreign speakers to share their views and experiences in observance of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women over the years.

Cade, who cannot travel by herself due to the severity of her injuries, will be accompanied by her cousin Shanda Cade and Beth Isaiah. To learn more about Yvette Cade and her foundation, visit www.yvettecadefund.org .

While Cade’s visit has been organised by Peridot Road Foundation on the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which will be observed on Saturday, November 25, her presentation has been scheduled for December 2 at a place and time to be announced later.

The December 2 programme will also feature presentations by local talents.

Arrindell said, “Our Foundation is very much aware of the many cases of continued violence and abuse against women and children in our society.

“This includes despicable acts of mental and physical abuse against women, children and men, some of whom have suffered similar acts of violence whereby the estranged partner resorts to burning their victims, thereby leaving, if the victim survives, painful physical and emotional scars on the family, friends and work environment of the abused.”
