PHILIPSBURG - Talks with several groups interested in airline company Winair are taking place. Meanwhile, the company is working on a financial package to lease its own jet plane.
Winair shareholder representative Constitutional and Home Affairs Minister Roland Duncan told The Daily Herald he had been having talks with three different local groups interested in investing in Winair. He declined to give any details about these groups.
Reports reaching The Daily Herald indicate that a local group of businessmen originating from India has been involved in the talks. However, Duncan said he hadn’t had any contact with such a business group. “Maybe they had contact with the Winair director,” said Duncan.
Besides the local groups, three different foreign companies have also showed interest in Winair: DAE, Caribbean Star and a Canadian group.
The intention, according to Duncan, is to make big step forward with Winair, competing on the Curaçao-St. Maarten route and other regional routes outside the Netherlands Antilles not being flown by any other company at this moment. Among other things, the plans include of acquiring a jet plane. But at the same time Duncan acknowledged that it wouldn’t be easy to realise such a plan.
Winair is not looking to buy an MD-80 type of jet. This brings extra cost, as the Antillean flight personnel have been trained to fly this types of plane since the ALM and DAE days. Duncan said he understood there were more efficient jet planes, but this would mean training the personnel to fly the new type of plane.
