New Belvedere statue vandalised

PHILIPSBURG - The statue erected by St. Maarten Housing Development Foundation (SMHDF) on the Belvedere roundabout was vandalised early Sunday morning within a week after its unveiling.

The foundation very much regrets the incident, said an upset SMHDF Director Michael Fowler on Monday. The gold-coloured statue depicting a boy and girl holding an open book was created by artist Mariano Brown and was unveiled last Monday, on the occasion of SMHDF’s 10th anniversary.

“This is serious and it happened within a week of the unveiling. We did this for the community,” said Fowler, explaining that the foundation had plans to further beautify the area with trees and benches. He said the statue would be repaired. The foundation has filed a report of vandalism with police.

Brown, about to commence finishing works when he discovered the damage to one of the arms and back of the statue on Sunday, called it a “very sad case.”

“It is bad that we have such individuals in this society,” he said. Brown suspects that the damage was done with a hammer and chisel or another sharp object. The statue is made of plaster and fibreglass and has a steel frame.

“I don’t believe it was normal vandalism,” said Brown, who didn’t want to point a finger at the residents of the Belvedere housing complex. “I don’t want people to say that the people from Belvedere are bad. They are not,” he said.

What struck Brown and Fowler was that the vandal(s) didn’t leave any debris and neatly cleared the area with a broom. It took Brown some six months to create the statue themed “Vini, Vidi, Vici.”
