Over 80 attend Westin job fair

PHILIPSBURG - More than 80 students and other persons attended the first day of the two-day interactive mini job fair organised by Westin Dawn Beach Resort and Spa and were given an opportunity to apply for any of the 180 jobs that will be available when it opens in St. Maarten in December.

Alluding to Westin workers as “shining stars,” Regional Manager Dan Szydlowski said the resort was built on the quality experience delivered to clients.

Attendees were shown a video of the Westin advertisement that will start airing on television in June. Another video was shown about what is expected of Westin’s shining stars and another about brands.

Alluding to the resort’s theme “Instinctive,” “Renewal,” and “Personal,” Szydlowski said Westin “is not just about a comfortable bed and clean room.” The resort strives to create a personal relationship with its clients, tries to anticipate and meet its customers’ needs in advance and aims to renew customers with its top quality service.

Although the same fresh scent emits from all Westin resorts, Westin St. Maarten will be unique in its own way, Szydlowski said. He said clients would be given a specially scented cloth to “wipe away” their problems. At night the patio of the property will be transformed with a one-hour reception featuring music in a candlelight setting. “We want it to be unique and we want our guests to be renewed,” Szydlowski said.

Carlos Sanchez, who has been working at Westin for quite a number of years, will be the local General Manager when the resort opens at the end of the year. Speaking about his own beginnings with Westin, Sanchez said it provided the opportunity for internal growth.

Westin officials will return to the island July 23-27 to conduct interviews with applicants. Employees will be trained before the resort opens.

Thursday’s session, which was attended by Education Commissioner Sarah Wescot-Williams, Labour Commissioner Louie Laveist and Personnel Affairs Commissioner Roy Marlin, among others, was interactive. Students were asked to come up with names of their favourite brands and explain why they were their favourites.

At the end of the session students were given descriptions of the openings at the resort and application forms that have to be filled out and taken to the Education Department opposite the Post Office by Monday, May 22. The forms will be forwarded to Westin officials.

Laveist told students there were many opportunities in the hospitality industry and urged them to make use of the opportunity to find gainful employment.

Marlin said he was committed to creating opportunities for local people. He said if there was need to organise the fair a second and third time it would be done. “We won’t let this opportunity pass us by,” he said.

The job fair, which ends today, is the first phase of the recruitment drive being held by Westin to secure personnel for its new location in St. Maarten. Marlin had said earlier that other phases would target unemployed persons from the local market and students abroad who have or are about to graduate and have expressed willingness to return to the island to work.
