PHILIPSBURG - Members of the Island Council will receive an update on the Soualiga Patrol during a meeting of the Central Committee today, Monday.
The presentation by Police Chief Commissioner Derrick Holiday or another police commissioner is being given on the request of Central Committee Chairwoman Maria Buncamper-Molanus.
Buncamper-Molanus explained that the main reason for the presentation was for the Island Council members to receive an update on the status of the patrol team, which has been in the planning for a while.
She said she had written a letter to Chairman of the Island Council Lt. Governor Franklyn Richards a few weeks ago to request information. She subsequently had a meeting with Chief Commissioner Holiday regarding the obstacles and the problems with recruiting persons for the unit.
In the meantime, a temporary solution has been found by making members of the St. Maarten Voluntary Corps VKS available for the unit. However, it is important for the Island Council to receive information on a structural solution to patrolling areas frequented by both visitors and residents.
