GREAT BAY (GIS) – Commissioner responsible for the Government Information Service (GIS) Theo Heyliger, would like to congratulate St. Maarten Press Corps which includes the print and broadcast media on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, today Wednesday, May 03.
In 1993 the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed that May 3 is “World Press Freedom Day.” This day serves as an occasion to celebrate press freedom.
“Press freedom plays a very important role for democracy and development. The right of freedom of expression is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and its corollary, press freedom.
“The public has a right to know and access to knowledge and information. A free media plays a very important role in the sharing of information which is essential to democratic decision-making and to the socio-economic development of our island-nation.
“I would like to use this opportunity to thank the St. Maarten media and all those who work in this field for the job that they do and the long hours they work at times,” Commissioner Heyliger told the Government Information Service (GIS) on Wednesday.
