PHILIPSBURG - All of us in St. Maarten and St. Martin would like to take this opportunity to extend our deep sympathy and prayers for the two men and their families who were unjustifiably attacked on our Island last week.
We are shocked and extremely troubled that such an act could be committed on St. Maarten/St. Martin. We are a community recognized for its safety, our friendliness, having few serious crimes involving our visitors, friends and residents.
As a community, we have always expressed our commitment to be a welcoming environment for persons of all ethnic and religious backgrounds, and sexual preferences.
We pride our community on its acceptance of diversity. Our Island’s population is made up from more than 100 different nationalities, all working together to create a safe paradise that is a pleasure to live in, to work in, and to visit.
The entire private sector community of St. Maarten, through the St. Maarten Hospitality & Trade Association and the Chamber of Commerce, is fully cooperating with the government, particularly with the police department, the chief prosecutor and all appropriate authorities to apprehend the perpetrators in a timely manner.
It is our goal to remove the possibility of this type of indecency from ever happening again in our streets. We urge everyone in St. Maarten/St. Martin to join us in these efforts.
We thank all the people who have come forward to date to offer their support in this very distressing time and who are working to collaborate with the investigation.
We also ask that everyone in our community work together in combating any misperceptions that St. Maarten/St. Martin is intolerant of diversity.
While violent crimes targeting specific cultures and lifestyles are atrocious, we consider them to be isolated incidents and not representative of the overall culture of our Island.
We can best overcome these perceptions with the genuine respect and understanding of all who visit and live in St. Maarten/St. Martin.
