PHILIPSBURG - The official kick-off to repair all major sports facilities in St. Maarten took place at Melford Hazel Sports Complex in Sucker Garden yesterday. The Windward Island Bank signed a US $4.7 million financing package for the repairs recently.
Sports Facilities Upkeep Foundation President Kelvin Bloyden said the foundation had been working on finding a structural approach to renovate the island’s sports facilities for some time. “Despite all that was said, the foundation has remained resolute in its goal: the goal of realising a full overhaul of the island’s physical sport arena. For this reason, today marks a very important milestone for the foundation,” he said.
Windward Islands Bank Managing Director Jan Beaujon said he was satisfied already to see that since the discussion started to finance the project the complex had been cleaned up and made ready for construction to continue. “I hope that it will be finished before the school vacation starts,” Beaujon said.
Sports Commissioner Franklin Meyers said that since construction started in 2003 the funds made available had turned out not to be enough to finish construction. “However, we came up with a comprehensive plan to upgrade Melford Hazel Sports Complex, L.B. Scot Sports Auditorium and all basketball courts on the island.”
Melford Hazel Sports Complex will be a multipurpose sports centre. The indoor court will have multipurpose use and will be equipped for basketball and volleyball. On the property outside the building the present plans include a tennis court, space for an amateur boxing ring, a paved covered outdoor recreational area with a sitting area and toilet facilities and a playground for children, including a sand box and an area for shuffleboard.
