Government officials off to Hurricane Conference in Florida

PHILIPSBURG - Members of the Government Departments of Fire and Disaster Management and Government Information Service will be heading to Orlando, Florida in the United States of America to attend the renowned National Hurricane Conference, in its 28th year.

Winston Salomon, Head, Fire Department, Paul Martens, Section Head, Disaster Management, and Pedro de Weever, Journalist, G.I.S. will head towards the conference to absorb as much additional information as possible, update their current knowledge in the different fields of disaster, and return to their respective departments to share and utilize the acquired knowledge.

This year the conference will focus on the circumstances surrounding Katrina, the devastating hurricane that devastated the Southern part of North America.

In addition, the hurricane season of 2005, was the most destructive hurricane season in history, according to the conference brochure, leading to the largest disaster response in the history of the American Red Cross(Katrina), the largest mass evacuations (Katrina/Rita), the largest destruction of homes from any storm (New Orleans from Katrina).

Some of the topics are as follows: Debris management, Flood Risk Analysis, Health Care: Management Issues after landfall, Recovery: Pre-disaster, post-disaster, Public Awareness/Media: Communications in Crisis, Mitigation, Law Enforcement Issues, Engineering, Meteorology, Amateur radios, New Initiatives: preparedness, response, and recovery, among a host of other topics.
