Dawn Beach residents tell of dynamite blast
by The Daily Herald

PHILIPSBURG - Residents in Dawn Beach are concerned about debris that reportedly flew in the direction of their homes following a rock blasting exercise allegedly executed by contractors of the Westin Resort project Tuesday. However, the Fire Department said it had no knowledge of any explosive activity planned for that area.

Concerned residents contacted The Daily Herald around 6:30pm Tuesday, claiming to have actually seen falling debris hit their houses following the loud explosion, apparently from a dynamite blast. But the Fire Department said in a statement issued by Fire Officer Marco Heusdens, “As far as we are aware the contractors for that project are not in possession of any explosive material.”

A visit to the area in question showed a considerable number of rocks piled beneath a hillside bordering the Dawn Beach Estate, with several heavy equipment trucks and excavators in the area.

Heusdens said the Fire Department would look into the matter, as companies are required to make formal requests, which are usually reviewed by the Fire Department, before explosives permits are granted.
