PHILIPSBURG - After the placing of the 50 lb. yellow bags containing salt along the pond’s coast, the midge infestation has decreased considerable.
The salt has decreased the amount of pollution (waste), and therefore decreased the fertile breeding conditions for the procreation of midges.
“The salt bags have been working well,” said Antonio Boyrard, Head of the Hygiene & Veterinary department. “The salt dissolved within a few days since we placed them along the fresh pond, and we are now taking out the bags, refilling them with salt, and placing the highly visible bags in the same position that they were in for now, starting at the Zoo.”
In addition, Boyrard said that as soon as more new bags have arrived, they will be filled with salt and placed at new locations, other than the current positions. This will continue in a structured way for several weeks, according to Boyrard. After which, he said, the conditions will be assessed.
Boyrard wanted to point out as well that there will be no damage to the environment with the placing of these salt bags, for they are placed on the embankment of the pond, away from the fish.
