PHILIPSBURG - On Tuesday, March 7, 2006, Commissioners R. Marlin, L. Lavesit, and S. Wescot-Williams met with the General Manager Dan Szydlowski and Director of Food & Beverage Marcus Repp of the Westin Resort, Grand Cayman, to discuss the employment opportunities, recruitment, and training, in relation to the year-end scheduled opening of Westin St. Maarten.
Commissioner Laveist pointed out that there are select members of the community who will be targeted first.
“It is important to target the young students, after high school, who will not be traveling abroad to further their studies or at least not for now, and who will be looking for jobs, and to target the unemployed persons,” Commissioner Laveist said.
Westin management pointed out that this was utterly important, to be able to provide practical training. No matter their background, Westin would train persons according to their program. General Manager Szydlowski said that we are looking for persons with positive attitudes and team spirit, willing to work flexible hours, and willing to learn, among other attributes.
Westin’s Szydlowski said that guests of the hotel chain knew the brand and they would be expecting a designated type of service—a same standard wherever they may go to a Westin resort.
Commissioner Laveist added that the process will be fair and open, and that the main goal was to ensure that population will be beneficiaries. “I will leave no stone unturned in seeking ways that the people of St. Maarten participate in the economic boom. Those persons who can work and want employment and fit the criteria will be provided an opportunity.”
Also present at the meeting was the Departments of Labor and Education, and the University of St. Maarten.
