PORT-OF-SPAIN - Travelling within the Caribbean is way too hard says Dr Compton Bourne, president of the Caribbean Development Bank.

Speaking during a Commonwealth Heads of Government Business Forum (CHOGM) meeting on board the Serenade of the Seas cuise ship yesterday, Bourne said "anyone who travels through the region knows the nightmare" of getting intra-regional (island to island) transport".

Bourne's contribution came during a Business Forum Plenary which he chaired, themed Caribbean: A Place To Do Business.

He said if we were to really promote the region as a spot for business and as a whole, governments needed to invest more in making transportation within the region much more efficient.

Bourne also dubbed the Caribbean's legal machinery as "inefficient".

He said the governments in the region needed to set clear yearly targets for what needed to be improved and stick to them.

He said he also believed it was high time that Caribbean governments invested in "systems, procedures and technologies which would improve public administration".

The Commonwealth Business Forum opened on Tuesday and the 60th summit of the 53-member Commonwealth, officially opens at the Hilton Trinidad, amid high expectations for consensus on a range of global issues.

Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma has identified major agenda issues as, economics, finance, food security and global warming.

Head of the Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth II, arrives in Trinidad tomorrow.
