PHILIPSBURG - The workers of the SVB and the BZV, walked to the Government Administration building and the Parliament Building on St. Maarten Thursday, seeking clarity on the status of their future in Country St. Maarten.
Close to twenty five workers from both instances, gathered together at the office of the SVB just after 4pm on Thursday from where they marched to the Government Building then on to the Parliament Building after meeting with members of the Executive Council of St. Maarten.
Commissioner Frans Richardson and Xavier Blackman, promptly greeted the workers at the security point on the bottom floor of the building after which he invited them upstairs to the conference room where they eventually meet with three Commissioners.
They were initially heard by Commissioners Frans Richardson and Xavier Blackman, however, Public Health Commissioner Hyacinth Richardson who was away, rushed back to the Government building when he learned that the workers were seeking information.
Three Commissioners eventually heard a presentation from Christine Holiday-Jeffers of the SVB, stating that the workers were concerned about their future when the island gets its new status and a new insurance system falls into place.
She stated that the information has not been forth coming to the workers of the BZV and SVB about the plans of the Government for health care insurance on St.Maarten.
They also noted that it was a different case with the workers on Curacao as their status is secured with Country Curacao.
Mr. Raymond Jesserun of the ABVO who represents the workers, reiterated the concerns of the employees to the members of the Executive Council, who then promised that the Council would be willing to meet after St. Maarten Day.
This delay was due to the packed schedule of the Executive Council noting that some members were also off island. The expressed desire of the Council members is that the full Executive Council would meet with the workers and provide all the information that is being requested.
The workers agreed that they would wait and meet with the Council at a date, still to be determined. They however still delivered a letter to the Executive Council which clearly outlines there concerns and questions.
The workers then marched to the Parliament Building on St. Maarten where they delivered a copy of that letter that was given to the Executive Council on St. Maarten, to the Parliament of the Netherlands Antilles.
The workers are now awaiting their meeting with the Executive Council after which, the employees of the SVB and BZV are expected to be well informed on about their future in the new general insurance scheme for St. Maarten.
