PHILIPSBURG - On Friday October 30th and Saturday October 31st, the St. Maarten Medical Center once again supported their staffs’ commitment for continued education by hosting another Sexual Reproductive Health workshop.

This follow up workshop was on the request of the participants who attended the first workshop that was held back in August of this year.

The first workshop (14 & 15 August) focused on Sexual and Reproductive Health in general.

This time the workshop focused on the issues of Domestic Violence and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI).

Dr. Bonnie Richardson-Lake of Anguilla was the facilitator of this workshop.

Dr. Richardson-Lake has a doctoral degree in Health Education and has great experience in the area of Reproductive Health and HIV/AIDS. She is an expert and has experience in counseling nurses and other professionals in this field.

The aim of this workshop was to provide participants with tools which will help them to raise awareness about STI and Domestic Violence, increase their comfort level in counseling and educating clients on these issues and to identify challenges in working with victims of domestic violence and strategies for dealing with them.

The 12 nurses and 1 social worker of SMMC that participated in this workshop also took part in the first workshop and are all employees of the St. Maarten Medical Center.

The task force who organized these workshops is hoping to organize similar workshops in the near future for another group of SMMC employees.
