DEPOS holds information workshop on St. Maarten

PHILIPSBURG - A workshop is now ongoing at the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort aimed at preparing Country St. Maarten for a relationship with the European Union.

Mr. Ralf James the Deputy Territorial Authorizing Officer for the European Union Development Fund in the Netherlands Antilles stated that the workshop will address issues such as financing, financing organisations and the importance of knowledge in a relationship with the European Union.

Mr. James stated that in light of the pending constitutional changes, information is vital for the islands to prepare them for a future relationship with the European Union.

Within the new government structure of Country St. Maarten, a arrangement for a department to handle this relationship will be needed.

This is part of the work that is now being carried out by the Department of Development Corporation (DEPOS).

The European Union is aware of the constitutional development that the islands are currently going through and is prepared to assist the islands in their new constitutional status.

The department of (DEPOS) is a Federal entity that will be dissolved along with the Federal Government. Mr. James however noted that the personnel is willing to assist the islands in whatever areas that they may be needed.
