PHILIPSBURG - St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) workers are now more knowledgeable about preventing domestic violence and sexually transmitted infections (STI) after taking part in a workshop on the subject recently.

The workshop, held from Friday, October 30 to October 31, was a follow up to an earlier workshop on sexual and reproductive health held in August.

The twelve 12 nurses and one social worker who participated in last week’s workshop were also among participants of the one held in August. SMMC official Minerva Maccow said the second workshop was held on request of participants.

The first workshop focused on sexual and reproductive health in general, while last week’s zoomed in on issues of domestic violence and sexually transmitted infections (STI).

The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Bonnie Richardson-Lake of Anguilla. Richardson-Lake has a doctoral degree in Health Education and has a vast experience in the area of reproductive health and HIV/AIDS. She is an expert and has experience in counselling nurses and other professionals in this field.

SMMC said the aim of this workshop was to provide participants with tools which would help them to raise awareness about STI and domestic violence, increase their comfort level in counselling and educating clients on these issues and to identify challenges in working with victims of domestic violence and strategies for dealing with them.

The task force that organised the two workshops is hoping to organize similar workshops in the near future for another group of SMMC employees.
