POINTE BLANCHE - St. Maarten Harbour Group of Companies is undertaking a complete security review after the incident last week, when a pilot boat was stolen from under the nose of security guards.
Group CEO Mark Mingo told The Daily Herald that this was a very regrettable and grave breach of security that warrants a change of approach to ensure no breaches occur in the future. The harbour group recently had a thorough security audit carried out by a high level investigation and security firm. The audit recommendations are under review and the harbour is making ready to implement these as soon as possible.
Mingo and the harbour management team are scheduled to meet this week to go over the security audit and the incident involving the pilot boat theft.
The Coast Guard intercepted the man in the stolen boat several hours later. It was stolen Wednesday and heading to St. Croix with marijuana. The man was arrested.
Checkmate Security Services fired the unidentified guard for failing to stop the thief or report the suspicious behaviour, according to reports from various sources, which the security company refused to confirm or deny. However, Checkmate admitted that the security risk had been great.
